This November, the nation's dog owner can nominate their canine companions to participate in an ambitious, long-term study investigating healthy aging dogs. The Dog Aging Project aims to enroll 10,000 dogs in a study funded by the National Institute on Aging. The purpose is to identify the genetic and environmental factors that influence healthy aging. Complete a brief survey when the site goes live mid-November to begin the nomination process.
Many dogs live past the age of 7, which is considered a "senior", and age-related diseases are common. Dr. Kate Creevy, a founder of the Dog Aging Project, hopes the study will provide veterinarians with much-needed information.
The information gathered in the study from the pets will be made available to the public, giving other scientists worldwide the opportunity for additional research. The dog aging study will bring owners into the scientific process by allowing them to report their own observations about their dog's health and behavior during the study.
Be the first to hear about upcoming vaccine clinics and pet health tips in Ozark and the surrounding areas.
